Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) last night declared Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika winner of the presidential race in the May 20 Tripartite Elections.
Mutharika, who becomes Malawi’s fifth Head of State, and his running mate Saulos Chilima are set to be sworn-in as President and Vice-President respectively at the High Court of Malawi and Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal complex in Blantyre this morning.

Making the declaration at the National Tally Centre in Blantyre after Commissioner the Reverend Emmanuel Chinkwita Phiri announced the results, MEC chairperson Maxon Mbendera advised Mutharika not to take the confidence the people has shown in him for granted.
Said Mbendera: “People have elected you because they believe you can make a difference. So, do not waste your time on things that do not matter.”

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera finished second whereas incumbent President Joyce Banda who led the People’s Party (PP) came third and Atupele Muluzi of United Democratic Front (UDF) was fourth among the pre-election top four front-runners.
Banda, who ascended to the presidency in line with constitutional order on April 7 2012 after the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika, has become the second incumbent in Malawi to lose a general election. The first was founding president Hastings Kamuzu Banda who lost the first post-single party general election in 1994.

HOW THEY STAND
Peter Mutharika 1 904 399
Lazarus Chakwera 1 455 880
Joyce Banda 1 056 236
Atupele Muluzi 717 224

  3. Where is the manual re-count. It is so obvious this election was rigged. It would be laughable if it were not so tragic. Somuch for democracy in Malawi.

    1. I read somewhere that PP rigged in the North, MCP in the Centre and DPP in the South, judging from the outcome of the votes. But who does one blame for the so obvious incompetency, the MEC or the outgoing PP government? I would say the latter because it happened under their leadership. It’s time to move on though and learn from the mistakes.

  4. I get angry when I hear Malawians say its time to move on. As a Malawian I feel robbed of my right to chose a leader to represent me. If this is what it balls down to why then bother having elections? It has been known in the past that DPP rigged the elections in 2009 and now they have done it again. We have the nerve to call MCP cry babies? No! Enough is enough. We can not condone and sanction illegitimate government. MCP has every right to file a complaint with the courts even though we know what the out come will be. This is what DPP has been banking on. Malawians docility and meekness. They know that once they get in office Malawians will forget and the courts will do absolutely nothing. Better yet they will be bought just like MEC was.. What a shame!! How fast we forget. It was not too long time ago when chasowa was murdered by DPP syndicate. His case is yet to be solved. With DPP in office you are guaranteed nothing will come out of it. It was not too long time ago when we were lining up for forex and fuel while Bingu has bags full of US dollars at his residence. What a short memory Malawians have or is it dementia?
